China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released photos and specifications of the Seagull, an electric city car manufactured by BYD. This city car is rumored to hit the market this year and is priced between $8,860 and $14,770.

The Seagull will be the most compact car in BYD’s Ocean series, which currently consists of four vehicles: Seal, Dolphin, Destroyer 05 and Frigate 07. All of these cars share what the company calls the “Sea Aesthetic.”

The BYD Seagull is a five-door, four-seater hatchback. Its design is sharp from all sides and includes a roof spoiler, which is rather odd for a city car.

The BYD Seagull tailgate has three different designations, including Seagull, Seagull Q and Seagull mini, suggesting that the car will have at least three different versions.

The Seagull is 3,780mm long, 1,715mm wide and 1,540mm tall. It comes with a wheelbase of 2,500 mm. Weighs from 1160kg to 1240kg and comes with 15″ or 16″ wheels.

According to MIIT, the Seagull can be equipped with LED headlights as an option. It has a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery manufactured by FinDreams, a subsidiary of BYD. Its capacity is not included in the published documents, but local sources say it will have a capacity of 30.7 kWh. It will be powered by a 55 kW (75 hp) TZ180XSH engine.

The Seagull is likely to debut in the Chinese market soon. As stated in the MIIT announcement, BYD has clearly completed the design and is preparing to open sales to consumers.
